News

January 2012 - News from WG.  The updated consultation document is now available on the WG web pages.   See link here (opens in new window).  The consultation runs until the end of March.  Whatever your views please send them to WG.  I'll be putting up my own submission, any done for greyhound charities and also work on behalf of CARIAD, the new Welsh anti puppy farming coalition.  Links page updated.  Cardiff and Anglesey pages updated.  New page added on Council Website Comparisons - see new link on sidebar.

October 2011 - Newport Council updated.  I've also updated the FOI page - I'm still waiting for information from Cardiff and Caerphilly which was requested in August and July respectively.  It's incredibly frustrating that local Councils take so long to respond to requests.

August 2011 - I've added a page which discusses the performance of local Councils in relation to Freedom of Information requests on stray dogs.

In accordance with their own practice, I've now changed references to the Welsh Assembly Government to Welsh Government.  Pages are updated on a regular basis, so some older references may still be present until other content is refreshed.  Where an older document, such as a consultation response, includes references to WAG, I have allowed these to remain.

RCT, Powys, Bridgend, Swansea, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Flintshire, Wrexham, Monmouthshire, Conwy, Torfaen  and Merthyr Tydfil pages updated.

July 2011 - After the January deadline for consultations, we waited anxiously for developments.  It quickly became clear that action would not be possible before the WG elections in May.  Once the elections were held, inital information was that work was progressing.  At the end of June, the Minister published a statement giving an update on the situation.  Click here to see the statement (will open in a new window).

I've also done my annual round of FOI requests for stray dog statistics for 2010-11 and am beginning to receive data back - information for each Council and aggregated totals will be added over the next few weeks.  Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Neath Port Talbot  and Anglesey Council pages have been updated with the latest figures.

January 2011 - The New Year promises to be an exciting one for dog policy developments.  The Welsh Assembly Government is currently consulting on changes to the law on dog breeding, particularly aimed at reducing the incidence of puppy farming in Wales.  As part of this, they are proposing that all breeding bitches and pups leaving breeders should be microchipped.  Although this is not as far as I would like to see policies going, it is a huge step in the right direction for improved dog welfare in Wales, and if implemented is greatly to be welcomed.  I will be reporting on developments in this field.   I have set up a page on the website, entitled "WAG consultation" which will describe this in more detail and provide copies of my consultation responses.  See the links menu on the left.

Looking forward, there are a number of other issues the website will be investigating and campaigning on.  These include:-

  • Microchipping as a condition of dog ownership for tenants of social landlords

  • Microchipping of dogs leaving pounds

  • Improvement of information available to the public on Council websites

  • Out of hours management of strays

  • Kill rates - there is a shocking difference in the number of dogs killed by local authorities in their care.  This needs further investigation.

  • From April, release of 2010-11 financial year figures for strays - these will be added to the website and will allow further tracking of trends and analysis.

  • Pound provision and contracts

  • Trunk Road Agencies and local authorities - scanning of dead dogs

Although the site is in its infancy, I'm considering a newsletter to let users know of new developments, depending on demand.  If you think you'd be interested in this, email me and let me know.
