Vale of Glamorgan Council

Policy on scanning of stray dogs - The Council's two dog wardens will scan strays, and on average about 10% of all strays will be returned directly to their owner without going into kennels.  However, out of hours, scanning does not take place.  Working hours for dog wardens are :- Mon-Thurs 8.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.  and Friday  8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

Policy on scanning of dead dogs - Dogs picked up and note taken of location and description if owner contacts.  No scanning. Body taken to depot and stored >3 months before disposal at pet crematorium.  Informally, dog wardens will scan if they come across a dead dog, but this should not be assumed.

Microchipping provision - The Council does not provided microchipping services.  Queries are referred directly to the Dogs Trust.

Out of hours service for stray dogs - Provided by Croft Kennels, who do NOT scan dogs for chips.

Numbers of stray dogs  - Click here (opens in new window) to see the Vale's figures for the past three years.  The Council is to be congratulated on its low kill rate and slowly declining overall figure for strays.

Additional services - None provided.  Chipping and neutering queries are referred to the Dogs Trust.

Dog Control Orders -  A powerful tool to manage stray dogs, nuisance dogs and dog fouling. The Vale does not appear to have adopted DCOs, as it is still using a variety of bye laws, including seasonal restrictions on popular bathing beaches.

Social Landlords (may include Housing Associations) - Increasingly, Council Housing Departments and other social landlords are introducing tenancy rules that specify the need for microchipping of dogs kept by tenants, in part due to the problems caused by status dogs, strays, inappropriate dog breeding and associated anti-social behaviour. Awaiting input.
