Swansea Council

Policy on scanning of stray dogs - All stray dogs are scanned for a chip.  At the moment, Swansea does not record how many stray dogs are picked up wearing either a collar or a chip, but in correspondence, estimated the majority do not.

Policy on scanning of dead dogs - Swansea do provide a scanning service for dead dogs, and I think are unique in that they will also scan all dead cats that are found.  Although this website is primarily focused on dog microchipping issues, cats are killed on the road far more often than dogs, and I can imagine this must be a great worry for cat owners, particularly as cats are so prone to wandering.  Swansea are to be congratulated on the provision of this service, which must at least provide peace of mind to distressed pet owners.

Microchipping provision - Swansea do not currently provide a microchipping service, although they are hoping to provide some joint chipping activities with the Dogs Trust in the future.

Out of hours service for stray dogs - Swansea have an out of hours reception service for stray dogs at their Pipehouse Wharf depot.  Having used it personally and spoken to others who have, I can confirm the process works very well and allows dogs to be deposited smoothly.  From the depot, dogs are then taken by the dog warden to the Council's kennels.

Numbers of stray dogs and how they are dealt with - Click here to see the summary on stray dog figures in Swansea, received via a FOI request (will open in a new window).

Additional services - Dog warden duties are carried out in conjunction with other Pest Control work and it's sometimes the case that proactive dog work is pushed out by peaks in demand for the pest service.

Dog Control Orders -    Swansea has a number of byelaws to restrict dogs, primarily in relation to dogs on beaches during the summer months.  In addition, dogs must be kept on a lead in certain popular areas, such as the pathway around Swansea Bay to the Mumbles.  The Council's website gives full details, maps, dates and so on, and is very clear and informative on this issue.
