Pembrokeshire Council

Policy on scanning of stray dogs - Pembrokeshire do scan stray dogs.  Unfortunately, they do not keep records of the number of stray dogs picked up that are returned directly to the owner without entering kennels.

Policy on scanning of dead dogs - Dead dogs picked up by refuse teams who do not have scanners. Will ask dog control wardens to scan in some cases, and will inform wardens of dogs found. Given this uncertainty, owners should probably assume a dead dog would not be scanned.

Microchipping provision - Not provided regularly. Occasional, ad hoc sessions with the Dogs Trust.

Out of hours service for stray dogs - Out of hours, dogs may be taken to the private kennelling contractor, provided there is a space to receive it.  No collection service out of hours.

Numbers of stray dogs - Click here to see stray dog figures for Pembrokeshire (opens in new window).

Additional services - The Council runs occasional events in conjunction with the Dogs Trust to promote low cost microchipping. The website invites interested owners to contact the Council to find out the next event - would be great to see a calendar of these on the website.  The website also suggests that low cost neutering may be available.

Dog Control Orders -  The website helpfully sets out very clearly information on Dog Control Orders and seasonal beach restrictions in the area. Given Pembrokeshire is a very popular holiday destination with rightly celebrated beaches, this is useful for  anyone visiting the County with their dog.

The website is brief but is clearly laid  out, with step by step information on what to do if a dog is lost or found.  They also have a gallery of found dog photographs and photos/descriptions of dogs needing homes. Click here to see the website checklist.

Costs of Releasing Dogs from Council Pound £25 statutory charge plus £8 per 24 hours in kennels, payable strictly by cash only, and retained by the kennelling contractor.

Kennelling  Services - Provided by Llanstinan Boarding Kennels, telephone 01348 840676.  Visit their website here (opens in new window).   Kennelling services are due for review and renewal in April 2012.
