Newport Council

Policy on scanning of stray dogs - Newport's dog wardens will scan any stray and will try to contact owners.

Policy on scanning of dead dogs - dead dogs are not scanned by the Council.  Any that are picked up are taken to the pet crematorium in Redwick.

Microchipping provision - The Council's kennels provide a microchipping service for only £10 during normal opening hours.  All dogs rehomed through the kennels are also chipped.   Congratulations to Newport for providing this service.

Out of hours service for stray dogs - On its website, Newport says that stray dogs should be reported to Summerhill Veterinary Centre on (01633) 255394, though the website does not make it clear what if any facilities exist for reception, and if this includes collection or is purely for delivered dogs.

Numbers of stray dogs - Click here to see Newport's stray dog figures for the past four years (opens in new window).  Newport works in conjunction with Hope Rescue, who re-home the majority of dogs from the kennels (those not reclaimed by their owners).    Click here to visit their website (opens in new window).

Dog Control Orders -  Newport introduced Dog Control Orders into its three municipal cemeteries in 2009.

Newport's web site is functional and basic.  Positively, it gives clear information about microchipping services, kennel locations and opening hours, and how to pay when reclaiming your dog.  Click here to see the website checklist (opens in new window).   The  dog pages for stray dogs can be located under Trading Standards, not Environmental Health.

Costs of Releasing Dogs from Council Pound - Newport are to be congratulated for having very clear information on their website about the kennelling charges and payment methods.
