Policy on scanning of stray dogs - Monmouthshire will scan stray dogs, and notify the owner if a chip is found.

Policy on scanning of dead dogs  - If body is complete, description noted and warden will scan, then contact owners if possible.  When a dog is picked up by the Highways section out of hours or off a trunk road the dog is not scanned (management reluctant to provide equipment).

Out of hours service for stray dogs - Monmouthshire changed its out of hours service for strays in February 2011.  The dog warden will no longer collect - instead members of the public can take a dog to the designated kennels, Whitewalls Kennel in Magor - telephone 01633 880362.  Email -  info@whitewallkennels.co.uk

Numbers of stray dogs - Click here to see the stray dog figures for Monmouthshire for the past four years (opens in new window).  There has been a slow and gradual downward trend in the overall number of strays over the past four years, but a worrying jump in the number of dogs killed in the last year.

Additional services - Monmouthshire provide microchipping services for £9.99 or FREE if you are on means tested benefits.  This is organised via the kennels (see contact details above). Congratulations to the Council on offering this service.

Dog Warden telephone number - call 01633 644705.  To see the website checklist, click here (opens in new window).

Costs of Releasing Dogs from Council Pounds - There is a release fee of £30 payable to Monmouthshire County Council in addition to any kennelling, veterinary fees and any other costs incurred. Kennelling costs for dogs are £6 per day.   Payment to be made direct to the kennels by cash, credit or debit card. Cheques are not accepted.

Kennelling  Services - are provided by Whitewalls kennels in Magor and the service is due for review in April 2012.
