Houndmistress Anglesey Council
Policy on scanning of stray dogs - Anglesey has stated in correspondence that on the first occasion of a dog straying, if the dog is wearing ID, the owner will be contacted. Similarly, if it is the first time of straying, the dog will be scanned for a chip. The authority does not keep a record of how many dogs it picks up that are wearing ID or are scanned to identify their owner. I am also curious as to how they can identify canine "first time offenders", although I understand that there are regular "repeat" visitors to kennels. Policy on scanning of dead dogs - Anglesey do not scan dead dogs for chips. Microchipping provision - Anglesey do not provide a chipping service for dogs. Out of hours service for stray dogs - Dogs picked up out of hours are taken to Nant y Corn kennels (see details below under Kennelling) Numbers of stray dogs and how they are dealt with - Click here for figures (link will open in a new window). During this time, no pups were born in kennels. Anglesey are to be congratulated on the substantial reductions in the numbers of dogs destroyed, and the big increase in dogs returned without entering kennels. Additional services - Click here to see the website checklist (opens in new window). It has the excellent service of providing a photo service of all strays picked up, which is updated daily. Anglesey are to be congratulated on this simple, user friendly idea which helps to reunite dogs and owners as quickly as possible. Like most Councils, I believe the website could be further improved by including more detail on services provided and news of forthcoming events involving dog wardens. Anglesey, along with Gwynedd, also provide an additional service for dog owners. For payment of a fee, the dog owner can purchase a special tag for their dog's collar. If the dog is found by a Dog Warden it is reunited with the owner without having to go into kennels. I can see how this may be particularly useful for holidaymakers on the island and I aim to further research this scheme to provide some data and information on its management. Dog Control Orders - A powerful tool to manage stray dogs, nuisance dogs and dog fouling. Awaiting further input. Contact Details for Dog Warden Service Anglesey Council Website Environmental Health Department Animal Welfare - telephone (01248) 752866 Email environmentalhealth@anglesey.gov.uk I have found that on average, email enquiries to Anglesey Council have been answered within three days, and FOI requests are answered on the next working day - very impressive, and sadly not typical of local Councils in general. Although Anglesey Council as a whole has had some well-publicised problems, the Dog Warden service has some excellent features. Costs of Releasing Dogs from Council Pounds - The Council charges £65, which is made up of a £25 statutory element plus £40 for transport. Additional kennelling fees are payable directly to the kennelling contractor. Kennelling Services - Anglesey, along with Gwynedd and Conwy uses Nant y Corn kennels in Abergele. You can visit their website here or call them on 01745 824646. The website also has pictures of the stray dogs received from Anglesey and Conwy. If you have lost your dog in the North Wales area, this should be your first port of call. Cost of service For 2009/10 the revenue budget for the service was £67,070 For 2010/11 the revenue budget for the service was £67,140 For 2011/12 the revenue budget is £64,960.
