Houndmistress Merthyr Tydfil Council Merthyr will scan stray dogs for a chip. Out of hours, this is less likely. Anecdotally, I have heard of incidents on weekends where dogs have not been scanned, although of course it is impossible to say accurately how frequent this is. Merthyr do not scan dead dogs. Microchipping provision - I can find no information on their website about chipping, neutering or any form of promotion of responsible dog ownership. Numbers of stray dogs - Click here to see the stray dog figures for Merthyr Council for the past four years. Like most Valleys authorities a relatively high number of dogs are killed. Merthyr is in the sad position of having the highest incidence of stray dogs per capita in Wales. Contact Details for Dog Warden Service - Telephone 01685 725137 Merthyr's website with regard to stray dogs is very brief, comprising one page of basic information about the dog warden service. It does not even give the most basic items such as the costs of retrieving a lost dog from kennels, or how to pay. Click here to see the website checklist (opens in new window). Costs of Releasing Dog from Council Pound - In a FOI request, Merthyr confirmed the following charges. Important note - the kennel does not accept credit or debit cards - payments are CASH ONLY. Fees are £8-50 per day plus a fixed fee for handling of £12, plus any emergency veterinary costs (such as vaccination). If the dog has been impounded on previous occasions, a penalty fee of £25 is applied. Kennelling Services are provided by a contractor (Bridgecroft Kennels, Hengoed and their telephone number is 01443 832345) and the service is due for retendering in 2012/13. The revenue budget is:- 2010/11 £26,070 2011/12 £26,070 Updated on 5th August 2011.
