Houndmistress

Denbighshire Council

Policy on scanning of stray dogs - Both the dog warden and the out of hours dog service will scan stray dogs.

Policy on scanning of dead dogs - dead dogs are NOT scanned.

Microchipping provision - No information on website.

Dogs Leaving Pounds - Denbighshire operate a series of charges for the release of strays which are stepped according to the dog's existing chip status, and if a dog is unchipped, the owner's willingness to have it done, which is then reflected in a lower release fee.

Numbers of stray dogs and how they are dealt with - Click here to see the summary document for Denbighshire Council (will open in new window), with information provided via a FOI request.  Please note that in responding, the Council did not enumerate the dogs that are returned to their owner without entering kennels.   This Council are to be congratulated that in the past three years, no dogs have been destroyed.  The Council website advises explicitly that there is no stray dog service in operation between the hours of 10.00pm and 8.00am Mon – Fri and 10.00pm – 10.00am at weekends, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.  Although the absence of service is to be regretted, Denbighshire do deserve some credit for at least making this clear on their website - many Councils do not.

Additional services - None listed on the website.

Dog Control Orders -  No information on DCOs on the website.

Contact Details for Dog Warden Service - not provided on the website.  Click here to see the website checklist (will open in new window).

Costs of Releasing Dogs from Council Pounds - If the dog warden seizes a stray and on the first occasion the dog is wearing ID or the dog is known to him/her then the dog can be returned to its owner. There will be a statutory fine of £25.00 for the release of the dog to its owner. If the owner refuses to pay or is unable to pay at the time of the dog warden’s visit then the dog will be taken to kennels, where further charges will be made for kennelling and local authority expenses. At present this charge will be £40.00 (minimum) plus £6.50 per day kennelling. As far as I know, Denbighshire are unique in levying a charge when returning a dog to its owner without the dog entering kennels, and are also to be congratulated on having charges that are variable depending on the dog's existing microchip status, and the owner's willingness to have the dog chipped.

Payments can be made by cash, cheque, credit or debit card.
