Welcome to Houndmistress

Conwy Council

Policy on scanning of stray dogs - Conwy will scan dogs and will notify owners on the first occasion.  Otherwise, the dog is taken straight to kennels.

Policy on scanning of dead dogs - Conwy do not currently scan dead dogs but are considering their policy on this matter.   Conwy offer online reporting for dead animals on the road.

Out of hours service for stray dogs - Conwy, along with other North Wales authorities, use Nant y Corn kennels as their pound.  Rather than go into detail on their own website, they provide a link to the pound kennel's own site which lists opening hours and other details.  Nant y Corn has one of the worst websites I have ever seen.  In particular, they seem oblivious to the internet convention that underlines indicate a hyperlink, there are random capitalisations and frequent and baffling use of different colour inks and fonts.  If you are feeling brave, and have your sunglasses ready, click here to link to the kennels (opens in new window).

Numbers of stray dogs - Click here to see the numbers of stray dogs for the past four years (opens in new window). Conwy do not record the numbers of dogs that are returned to owners without entering kennels.  Conwy are to be congratulated on the steep drop in the number of dogs that are killed, though unfortunately the overall trend for numbers of strays is upwards.

Dog Control Orders - Conwy already have some DCOs, particularly for their beach areas.  A consultation exercise has just been completed on further extensions to the DCOs and the Council website provides a great deal of information on the proposals.

Contact Details for Dog Warden Service - Telephone (01492) 575279 during office hours.

Click here to see the website checklist (opens in new window).  Conwy have a very good stray dogs website, which is laid out neatly and logically, though I found it difficult to find initially, since it is located within the Planning Section - not the first place you'd think to look when considering stray dogs.  Particularly worthy of praise are the fact that they have a small section on encouraging responsible dog ownership, and that they list the boarding kennels they licence.  Fees are clearly laid out, along with clear instructions for out of hours procedures.

Costs of Releasing Dog from Pound -

Statutory Fee £25

Collection Fee (Inc Vat) £40

Daily kennelling Fee £9.00

Total Day 1 £74.00

Day 2 £83

Day 3 £92

Day 4 £101

Day 5 £110

Day 6 £119

Day 7 £128

Day 8 £137

In addition to the fees listed above, veterinary fees (such as vaccinations) will be payable and there is a further charge of £25 if a dog is brought in out of hours.

Kennelling services are provided by a contractor, Nant y Corn kennel.  There is no renewal date for the arrangement as no formal contract is in place.

Revenue budgets

2010/11 £118,870
2011/12 £ 63,580

In correspondence, Conwy said that the drop in the revenue budget was as a result of a member of staff leaving and not being replaced, rather than a direct cut in service.
