Ceredigion Council

Policy on scanning of stray dogs  - Where duties allow. “Repeat offenders” taken straight to pound.

Policy on scanning of dead dogs - Domestic pets taken to depot, for storing in freezers before ultimate disposal.  Local attempts made to identify and community wardens do scan for chips.

Microchipping provision - Not known.

Out of hours service for stray dogs - Not known.

Numbers of stray dogs and how they are dealt with - Click here to see the figures for Ceredigion (will open in new window).  In an email, Ceredigion have said that dogs are only destroyed as a last resort when sick or injured, and under the guidance/advice of a veterinary surgeon.  This is reflected in the very low figures for dogs destroyed, for which Ceredigion are to be congratulated.

Contact Details for Dog Warden Service

Telephone number - 01545 572151

Click here to see website checklist (will open in new window).  Ceredigion is in the extraordinary position of having NO web pages on stray dogs, or dog wardens - as far as I know, this is unique among Welsh authorities.  I have patiently searched the Ceredigion Council website on a number of occasions and all I can find is the telephone number given above.  So although I've included the website checklist, I should stress there is little point in even clicking on it.

Costs of Releasing Dogs from Council Pounds - Statutory element of £25.00 plus £8.00 per day/part day.  Payment may be made via cash/cheque, although the authority has indicated it is examining offering alternative payment methods.

Kennelling  Services - The Council has contracts with two kennelling service providers. In correspondence, the service manager explained that they have continued to use the services of the same kennels for a long period, have no plans to change this arrangement at present but may seek additional service providers in the north and south of the county at some stage. Very little interest has been expressed in such service provision in the past when expressions of interest were requested by advertisement. One of the kennels used is Linton kennels - click here to visit their website (site opens in new window).
